Before it was a tango house, this was a café and bar on Perú 322, in Monserrat — a building from 1860 that first housed a school, where a bar was installed in 1920. The cedar panelling, Solomonic columns, checkerboard floors and wood-and-tin counter of that bar survive. It ran as a bar until the 1980s.

The decades
El Querandí's cuadro doesn't perform one version of tango. Across seventy-five minutes it moves through the music's own history, era by era, in the room where much of that history was written.
